Voting in the 2024 US Presidential Election: A Guide for Study Abroad Students

It can be a challenge to stay engaged with political events back home while you’re studying abroad, but we encourage all of you to cast your vote in the 2024 election no matter where in the world you are. This is an important one, and the race is a close one. Your opinion—whichever way you’re leaning—and your vote matter.

Luckily, it’s easy to vote from another country, but deadlines are quickly approaching so be quick!

STEP 1: REGISTER TO VOTE OR CONFIRM YOUR REGISTRATION

Before you can vote, make sure you’ve registered!

You can do register, or check if you’re already registered, at the US Vote Foundation or through your resident state’s election website. If you’re already registered, ensure your details are up to date.

Note that each state has its own registration deadlines and requirements.

STEP 2: REQUEST YOUR ABSENTEE BALLOT

Head over to the Overseas Voter Registration and Ballot Request link from the US Vote Foundation and complete the Overseas Registration and Ballot Request form (FPCA).

They’ll ask for your US voting address, your address overseas, your email address, and an ID number (last four digits of security number or valid state driver’s license).

Some states allow you to sign and submit your form via email. However, five states—Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, and New York—require you to send your ballot request by post (sorry!).

Make sure you have a printer available to use if you request to receive your ballot online.

Note your state’s deadline to request your ballot on time.

STEP 3: CAST YOUR VOTE!

Follow the instructions on your ballot and then check the Voter Materials Transmission Options for your options to return it.

(Note: Check your state laws before you consider posting a “ballot selfie” on social media; your vote could be invalidated!)

Be sure to return your ballot before the deadline.

Pat yourself on the back for using your voice and exercising your right to vote!

STEP 4: TRACK YOUR BALLOT

Once you send on your vote, many states provide a tracking service which you can use to make sure your vote has been received and counted.
