THE BEAUTY OF THE MEDITERRANEAN: SOUTH EAST OF SICILY
“To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything.”
- Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Sicily sits at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and has been aptly described as being a continent in miniature. Many civilizations have coveted this island for so long, and have made it a wonderful case-study for the creation of Mediterranean culture.
With history and heritage dating back almost three thousand years, the city of Syracuse is a unique pearl of Sicily, where it’s possible to experience the blend of the many different civilizations that went through the island over the centuries. Syracuse is a city where it is possible to witness and reflect on some of the main contemporary issues such as migration, human rights, conflict resolution, and to compare these with similar problems in the United States and other countries around the world.
-
Programs in Sicily will introduce the natural wealth comes from the island’s location. The city of Syracuse will serve as a home base on the island and will set the scene for all cultural explorations.
Through on-site lectures, learning field trips to businesses and organizations, students will discover the interconnectedness between the many civilizations and cultures which have made Sicily what it is today.

ITALY’S GREAT NORTHWEST: TURIN, LANGHE, AND THE ALPS REGION
In the Northwest of the Piedmont region in Italy, just 45 minutes from Turin and an hour and a half from Piedmont’s vineyards landscape of Langhe (UNESCO World Heritage site and birthplace of the Slow Food international movement) there is a gem: Pellice Valley. This Alpine valley represents a unique example of a culturally vibrant rural community that is strongly linked to its incredible history and traditions. Torre Pellice - the main village of the valley - has been defined by Edmondo De Amicis (famous Italian writer) as “The Italian Geneva”.
-
The Pellice Valley has been a place of resilience, first to the religious persecution of the Waldensians and then in opposition to Nazi-fascism during the second world war.
This troubled history over the centuries has created it’s current reputation as “Hospitality Village”.
In such a small community there are more than 40 different ethnicities and it’s one of the few mountain municipalities in Italy that is attracting new residents for its quality of life and the beauty of its environment.Nowadays, in particular thanks to the Waldensians community, that made Torre Pellice their home, a profound culture of kindness and solidarity is at the root of different social projects helping and assisting the vulnerable and people in need.
