Pre-Departure Packing: Tips & Tricks For Student Travelers
Some of us are last-minute packers, others have their luggage ready to go two weeks in advance. Regardless of where you fall on the packing spectrum, it can be worth reviewing so that certain items don’t fall between the cracks!
Since packing for an overseas adventure can be stressful, you might find that writing items out in a list or researching what other travelers have brought to certain destinations, would help alleviate pre-departure anxiety! Being well-prepared with your belongings will help ease you into your journey as you board your flight and head off to the next destination.
Keep on reading for six questions to consider when packing for your next global expedition!
Do I have all of my documents and passport? Have I made copies of them?
Documents can be helpful if you lose track of your daily agenda or need access to emergency contacts back home. Double check that you have packed your passport, student ID, and personal insurance card, and make photocopies of all of your important documents (passport, visa, credit cards) in case one gets lost. It can be easier to pull out a few pieces of paper with your flight itinerary and visa information, rather than searching through the inbox on your phone.
Have I visited my doctor, and have I packed additional medicine?
Remember to pack medications and spare set of glasses, or contacts, in case you need access to either during your time abroad! Think ahead about which medications or prescriptions you might need access to, and plan accordingly with your medical provider.
You’ll want to check with your doctor and make sure that you’re up to date on all vaccinations, and mention the country where you’re going in case they recommend any specific vaccinations. This way, you’ll be prepared for any situation and feel confident knowing you have the specific items with you!
What clothing should I bring?
Before traveling, always consider the weather when packing clothes! What season will you be arriving in? Is the destination known to have unexpected weather changes or is it fairly straightforward?
Be sure to always bring a pair of comfortable shoes, for long days of adventures, excursions, and literal travel! These might be a pair of sneakers, or something you wouldn’t mind getting a bit of dirt on. It’s smart to always bring a few extra pairs of socks and undergarments, while minimizing tops and bottoms.
Accessories, such as sunglasses, a hat, and essentials like sturdy rain and fleece jackets are also important to consider. Although these are easily replaceable if you forget them at home, it’s better to have it readily available. Please keep your valuables, such as jewelry, at home.
How do I create more packing room?
Mix and match your clothing so that you can wear various items more than once, if needed. This will save efforts during early mornings and keep your luggage from weighing a ton! Having options doesn’t mean you have to overpack! You can always switch up outfits with scarves / hats etc.
How do you travel minimal and space space? Roll your clothes or use packing cubes to conserve space. Pack your luggage first, and then remove half of it! You’ll most likely pack more items the first time that you don’t necessarily need.
Additionally, you’ll save space if you don’t throw your dirty clothes at the bottom of your suitcase. Consider bringing a foldable laundry bag to easily store clothes you’ve finished wearing, or bring an empty packing cube and fold them up after use! In the end, this will also help you save space!
What if I’m studying abroad for a few weeks or a semester?
If you’re staying for an extended time overseas, consider using compression bags when packing your clothing to save lots more space. Also, pack for at least two seasons! If you’re staying abroad for a semester, you’re bound to experience more than one weather pattern! When you use compression bags, you’ll probably want to step on the scale to see how much the bag weighs to avoid overweight luggage.
Which toiletries are necessary?
When packing toiletries, remember that you will be traveling to a country where items, such as shampoo and soap, can be found virtually anywhere. Don’t pack an immense amount of toiletries, rather, bring travel-sized containers. Besides, most accommodations, such as hotels, have these basic amenities available for you. This way, your luggage won’t be overcrowded with “extras”.
How much money do I need?
Money is also an important component when packing! Remember to alert your bank of any travel with your debit and credit cards. You don’t want to deal with the hassle of getting locked out of your accounts while you’re overseas!
Additionally, don’t convert thousands of dollars to local currency in cash, instead, bring at least $50-100 at least to start so that you will have fast cash for smaller items, such as food, public transportation, etc. Lastly, it’s best to keep your wallet or travel pouch in a safe area when traveling, so that the likelihood of losing it is kept to a minimum!
Do I need to pack electronics?
As likely as it is for you to remember your phone, what about a charger and international adapter? Adapters are available in a surplus of stores and come in various sizes, where some have multiple outlets, are available for specific countries only, or worldwide! In addition, purchase a portable charger so that you’ll have enough battery for your phone during long days of exploration in new cities!
Are you into photography or videography? Don’t forget your camera or GoPro! Just remember the batteries or extra memory cards! And you can’t forget about headphones! This is convenient when you’re traveling on the plane. There are also organizers for chargers and cords which are very handy when keeping everything in one place and untangled!
What should I bring on the plane?
When preparing your carry-on, think about items that’ll keep you occupied and cozy during your flight and any longer rides during your trip. Consider an e-reader (Kindle), travel pillow, headphones, chargers and adapters, deck of cards, or download travel games and movies on your electronic devices. Packing an empty reusable water bottle to fill up in the airport after going through TSA is a great idea, where you'll not only save money on bottled water but also reduce usage of plastic!
We highly recommend that you pack a change of clothing in case you have a long flight or in the unfortunate event that your luggage is lost or delayed! If you’re carrying on any toiletries or electronics larger than a phone (computer, Kindle, etc) pack them last, so that you’ll be able to easily take it out when you go through TSA.
Creating a Wish List
Are relatives asking what you’d like to receive for the holidays, or for your birthday? Which travel items might you consider putting on your wishlist? Consider adding items that you’ll be guaranteed to use!
Much of packing is about personal preference! Don’t sweat the small stuff if you forget it and most of all, have fun and embrace the learning experience. Packing is a great reminder of the amazing trip you’re about to embark on! Don’t forget to leave some space for some souvenirs!
